Here's my eBay small business success story

When William’s daughter convinced him to try selling antiques online, he immediately sold a $100 tin toy for $500. Needless to say he was hooked, and an online store was born. 17 years, three houses, and 10 employees later they’re the number one eBay store for Antiques & Collectibles. The store is a full-time job for William, his wife, two daughters, and one son-in-law. Together with a handful of close friends they run a successful online business that provides a comfortable living for six families and allows them to work side-by-side every day.

Why do you deserve this award? eBay has completely changed and re-shaped our family's life over the past 17 years, bringing us closer together. My wife and I went from not knowing if we were going to be able to pay our rent or feed our children to supporting ourselves and five other families with our flourishing eBay business.

How has selling on eBay contributed to your success? eBay is 100% responsible for our success. We would not be anywhere without it, as we do not sell anywhere else. eBay has allowed me to connect with customers from around the United States and the rest of the world that I would never have been able to reach before.

What is your proudest selling moment on eBay? A neighbor and friend fell on a financial hardship and came to us with a box of Hasbro Transformer toys from her mother who worked at Hasbro during the 1980s. We listed the entire collection for her, and over the course of three months, we were able to give her over $100,000! eBay changed her life, and we were so proud to have been able to help her.

What was the most interesting item you’ve sold on eBay? Well, we have sold so many interesting, important, historical and unique items over the years that it's difficult to pinpoint one! I guess the first one that comes to mind was a series of 19th century letters written between two sisters – one in Boston and the other who was a Western Pioneer and living in Montana. The letters went into historical detailed differences between the American West and East. The most interesting part of this sale was that we were able to sell the letters to members of the family of the two sisters!

What advice would you give to other sellers? Stay consistent, list regularly, sell with no reserve, and trust eBay. Give your customers a 100% unconditional guarantee and always stand behind your product. It takes a while, but a steady repeat base of customers who trust you is the key to success!
