Here's my eBay small business success story

As a single mom trying to finish college, Tanya started selling motorcycle accessories on eBay to make some extra spending money. Business was so good that she quickly faced a difficult decision—finish her degree or go full-time on eBay. She chose the latter, and business has been growing steadily ever since. Tanya and her son were able to move from a one-bedroom apartment to a three-bedroom house and buy their first brand new car. Tanya was also able to put her son through college where he recently earned his bachelor’s degree. None of this would have been possible without a lot of hard work, and a little help from eBay.

Why did you first start selling on eBay? I began selling on eBay in 2003 to earn a little extra money while I was in college. I was a single mom and working full-time on a degree in computer science, so the extra income from selling on eBay was a big help for my son and me.

Why do you deserve this award? Leaving college to start an eBay business was a tough decision, made even more difficult by the fact that I had a responsibility to provide for my family. While I did not achieve my goal of earning a college degree, I was fortunate enough to discover a career that I am extremely passionate about and continues to thrive after 13 years as an eBay seller. With years of hard work and pure dedication to this business, I have earned the trust of thousands of eBay customers and continue to find new ways to improve their buying experience on eBay.

Share a fun fact about yourself/your business. I have been a huge motorcycle enthusiast since I was a little girl. I never imagined that this lifelong interest would turn into a successful business in the motorcycle industry.

How has selling on eBay contributed to your success? Many of the brands that we offer are not available to customers at their local brick and mortar shops. Selling on eBay has enabled us to reach customers who would otherwise have limited or no access to these great brands. The exposure provided by eBay has helped us to become one of the top retailers in the world for some of the most well-known brands in the power sports industry.

What is your proudest selling moment on eBay? My proudest moment selling on eBay was moving the business from my small college apartment to a 1500 square foot warehouse. Selling on eBay had become an actual business, not just something to make extra spending money. Seeing our new company name above the door made the risks and sacrifices worth the effort.
